In simple terms, bathymetry is the underwater equivalent of a land topographic survey. While a topographic survey records hills, valleys, slopes and ground features above water, a bathymetric survey records the contours, depths, slopes and features of the seabed or waterbody floor. Shallow-water surveying presents a different set of operational challenges.
