What Is a Bathymetric Survey?
Methods, Equipment, Applications and Deliverables
What Does a Bathymetric Survey Measure?
A bathymetric survey measures the depth of a waterbody and determines the three-dimensional shape of its bottom. Depending on the project, it may identify:
The resulting data can be presented as bathymetric charts, contours, digital terrain models, colour-coded depth surfaces, cross-sections, point clouds and three-dimensional seabed models.
What is a Bathymetric Survey?
A Type of Hydrographic Survey

Survey vessels collect bathymetric data to accurately map underwater depths and seabed features.
Bathymetric Survey
IN DEEP WATER

Deep-water bathymetric surveys are commonly conducted from purpose-equipped marine survey vessels.
Deep-water surveys support offshore developments, pipelines, marine terminals, wind-energy projects, navigation studies, seabed investigations and dredging programmes. The survey vessel may carry an integrated package consisting of:
The vessel follows a predefined line plan while the onboard team monitors data quality, seabed coverage, vessel motion, positioning and environmental conditions. Preliminary processing can be carried out during acquisition, allowing gaps or questionable areas to be detected and surveyed again before demobilization.
Bathymetric Survey
IN SHALLOW WATER

Mapping underwater depths in shallow water

3D bathymetric model of the seafloor.
Shallow-water surveying presents a different set of operational challenges. Conventional vessels may be unable to enter an area because of: • Insufficient water depth • Narrow access • Submerged debris • Strong currents • Reefs, rocks or mudflats • Sensitive environmental habitats • Navigation hazards • Proximity to marine structures.
In these conditions, surveyors may use small boats or unmanned surface vessels, also known as USVs. A USV can carry a single-beam or multibeam echo sounder together with RTK-GNSS positioning and other compact survey sensors.
Shallow-water bathymetry is often required for:
Vision International’s marine fleet includes survey vessels and unmanned surface vessel capability for confined harbour and shallow-water work.

APPLICATION
Typical Bathymetric Survey Deliverables
The deliverables should be agreed before fieldwork because they influence the equipment, coverage, accuracy and processing requirements. A professional bathymetric survey package may include:
Depending on the client’s requirements, digital data may be delivered in formats compatible with CAD, GIS, hydrographic and three-dimensional modelling software.
Common Uses for Bathymetric Surveys
Bathymetric surveys provide detailed underwater mapping of seafloor depths, contours, and features to support ports, harbors, dredging projects, offshore oil and gas developments, subsea pipelines, coastal engineering, and environmental assessments. Accurate bathymetric data enables safer navigation, better project planning, and more effective marine asset management.
How Vision International Performs a Bathymetric Survey
A typical Vision International marine-survey workflow includes:
1. Project planning
We review the survey area, water depths, existing information, deliverables, coordinate reference system, vertical datum, accuracy requirements and marine access conditions.
2. Mobilization and calibration
The selected vessel and sensor package are mobilized. Equipment offsets, positioning systems, motion sensors and sonar systems are checked and calibrated.
3. Data acquisition
The survey vessel or USV follows the planned line pattern while the hydrographic team monitors positioning, seabed coverage, sonar performance, sound velocity and data quality.
4. Processing and quality control
Raw measurements are corrected, filtered, cleaned and referenced to the required datum. Coverage and quality-control checks are completed before surfaces, charts and drawings are generated.
5. Interpretation and delivery
The processed survey data is converted into the agreed engineering deliverables, such as bathymetric charts, seabed models, contours, sections, dredging quantities and technical reports.
Vision International combines marine field crews, surveying specialists, engineers, offshore geotechnical resources and data-processing capability within one organization. The company has operated in Kuwait since 2004 and delivers services across Kuwait, GCC and the Middle East.
